Fresh, chilled, or frozen semen. What’s the difference, and which is right for your mare?
Here’s a quick breakdown of the pros and cons of each option:
Fresh semen This typically offers the highest conception rates, as it’s inseminated immediately after collection. However, fresh semen is usually used on-site at the stallion station, so your mare will need to travel there.
Chilled semen A popular choice for many breeders. Collected and stored chilled, it can be shipped directly to your mare, saving the hassle of moving her. With most stallions, we can arrange same-day courier delivery if ordered in the morning.
Frozen semen Often used for top international stallions whose fresh or chilled semen isn’t available. While more flexible in terms of timing, frozen semen can have a lower conception rate due to the freezing and thawing process.
